Examination Boards

AQA...

AQA are an independent education charity and the largest provider of academic qualifications taught in schools and colleges. We set and mark the papers for around half of all GCSEs and A-levels taken every year.
Their qualifications are highly valued by employers and universities and enable young people to progress to the next stage of their lives. They suit a range of abilities and include GCSEs, AS and A-levels, the Extended Project Qualification, the AQA Baccalaureate, Tech-levels and Technical Awards. Our UK qualifications are also internationally recognised and taught in 30 countries around the world.

Note: We have decided that all candidates will be entered for the full A level course and examined in Year 13. The new course is 'linear'. This means that the AS and A level qualifications are separate from one another. We have taken the decision not to offer an AS level in photography from September 2015.

The grade barriers are set by the examination board and are subject to change.

Component 1 is worth 60% of the final grade and the final 40% is awarded through Component 2.

There are RAW and SCALE marks.
RAW marks are what we mark you out of. You can gain 24 marks in each assessment objective totaling 96 marks. These are then converted to the scale marks.

The Syllabus...

Picture
From September 2015 the A level photography course will be linear at Tudor Hall School. We have decided to teach only the full A level course. We are no longer offering AS level.

The reasons for this are as follows:
  • The AS course no longer counts towards the full A level. Therefore, preparation for the AS will not benefit students (as it did previously) who want to achieve a full A level in photography.
  • Very few of our existing students tend to drop photography after AS level
  • Many students begin photography A level having not studied the subject at GCSE. This can mean that getting up to speed with knowledge, understanding and skills takes some time. Preparations for the Externally Set Task begin on 1st February. We don't believe that entering students for an exam at this stage is appropriate.
  • We welcome the opportunity to work with students over two years to prepare them for assessment. We believe this will be better for students, supporting the development of their knowledge, understanding and skills.
We have made this decision very clear to all our candidates. We think it is in their best interest.
